【Title】 Society, State, and Migration in the Andaman Islands After 1947: Sri Lankan Repatriates and Other Settlers in Remote Places
【Speaker】 Prof. Frank Heidemann (University of Munich [Ludwig-Maximilians- Universität München])

【Language】 English

Abstract:

Society on the Andaman Islands is described as "Mini India", a polyglot entity with a colonial history and migrants from various places in South Asia. Multiple castes, classes, communities, religions, and languages reflect the social complexity of this remote Union Territory. Challenging the analytical usefulness of Euro-centric perceptions of time-structured historical models as the only valid means of explaining the present, Frank Heidemann explores alternative analytical avenues opened by a space-bound concept of history. His focus is on the small number of former tea estate workers, who were repatriated from Sri Lanka to India on the basis of Indo-Ceylon Agreements of 1964 and 1974. His co-edited volume "Manifestations of History: Time, Space, and Community in the Andaman Islands" was published in October 2016 by Primus Books, Delhi.
